Spotlight #2: Protective Services

Fire

The McNab/Braeside Fire Department is a volunteer-based fire service dedicated to providing fire prevention, public education, and fire and life safety protection to residents and visitors. Operating from three stations located in Glasgow, White Lake, and Braeside, the department responds to approximately 100 emergency calls annually. The department also maintains mutual aid agreements with neighbouring fire departments to support emergency response across the region.

Core services include fire suppression and protection, public education and fire inspections, vehicle fires and extrication, ambulance assistance, alarm response, shore-based water rescue, and farm equipment rescue. In addition to the core services offered by the department, our firefighters also participate in a wide range of community activities both locally and with neighbouring departments promoting fire prevention and education initiatives.

The operating budget for fire services includes administrative costs (such as salaries, benefits, training, insurance, etc.), purchases of safety equipment and clothing, small tools, equipment testing, radio/pager services, dispatch services, as well as maintenance/repairs and fuel for the fleet of pumpers, tankers, and aide vehicles.

The Township has a Fire Master Plan (FMP), completed in 2025, which evaluates the Township’s current and future fire protection needs and services. Any purchases required to address recommendations are factored into the annual budgets. The FMP outlines 34 recommendations focused on modernizing fire stations and facilities, strengthening departmental staffing and administrative capacity, improving record management, and reviewing existing policies, procedures, and by-laws to enhance the effectiveness and safety of fire services. Police

The Township of McNab/Braeside contracts with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) for the provision of policing services in our community. Under the Community Safety and Policing Act, the South Ottawa Valley O.P.P. (SOVOPP) Detachment Board oversees operations of the Renfrew Detachment of the OPP to help maintain an adequate and efficient policing service across our region.

The annual operating budget includes costs related to these services, which are determined by the OPP’s and SOVOPP Detachment Board’s budgets.

By-law Enforcement

The Township of McNab/Braeside engages a bylaw enforcement officer on a contract basis. As of August 2026, there were a total of 147 complaints year-to-date and 306 tickets issued (including parking tickets).
